Dhaka - Twenty foreigners were killed in an upscale cafe in Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh on Friday night. Islamist militants attacked the upscale cafe and shouted "Allahu Akbar", killing 20 foreigners inside before police could rescue 13 hostages on Saturday.

The crisis began when security guards in the Gulshan district of Dhaka, noticed several gunmen outside a medical center. When the guards approached, the gunmen stormed into a building's restaurant packed with guests waiting for tables and shouted "Allahu Akbar" (God is Great). Police said that the gunmen exchanged sporadic gunfires while they are outside for several hours. Security forces tried to get into the premises onset of the siege but they were welcomed with bullets and grenades that killed two police. Six gunmen were killed during the police operation and one was captured.

Bangladeshi army trooped in to clear the 12-hour siege on Saturday after the militants attacked the restaurant on 9 pm Friday night.  All 20 victims were foreigners, most of whom were killed by sharp weapons during the siege, according to Col. Rashidul Hasan.

Dhaka cafe attack is a major mark by the Islamic militants who has been targeting individuals over the past 18 months that are advocates of a secular or liberal lifestyle in a mostly Muslim Bangladesh.
